Un Cuore Come Un Fiume

Se versi una manciata di sale in una tazza d’acqua, l’acqua diventa imbevibile; se invece versi il sale in un fiume la gente può continuare ad attingerne l’acqua per cucinare, lavare, e bere. Il fiume è immenso e ha la capacità di ricevere, abbracciare, e trasformare.

Quando il nostro cuore è ristretto, in noi la compassione e la comprensione sono limitate, il che ci fa soffrire: non riusciamo ad accettare o tollerare gli altri coi loro difetti e pretendiamo che cambino. Quando il nostro cuore si espande, invece, quegli stessi difetti non ci fanno più soffrire: abbiamo in noi tanta comprensione e compassione e siamo in grado di abbracciare gli altri; li accettiamo così come sono, dando loro la possibilità di trasformarsi.

La grande domanda, dunque, è: come si fa ad aiutare il nostro cuore a crescere?

A Heart Like A River

If you drop a handful of salt into a glass of water, the water becomes undrinkable; if instead you drop the salt in a river, people can continue to draw the water for cooking, bathing, and drinking. The river is immense and has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform.

When our heart is restricted, our compassion and understanding are limited, it is this that makes us suffer: we are not able to accept or tolerate others’ defects and we expect them to change. When our heart is expansive, instead, those same defects do not make us suffer: we have in us much understanding and compassion and we are able to embrace others; we accept them for how they are, giving them the possibility to transform.

The big question, then, is: how do we help our heart grow?
